Learning with Simply Piano: The basics

Written by Debra

Wow! You must be so excited to begin your piano learning journey 🌟. Once you start your lessons in Simply Piano, you'll be playing amazing music in no time at all! 🎶

How does the app teach me how to play?

Simply Piano works by listening to the notes you play and gives you live feedback on whether you're playing the right note. If the app notices any mistakes, it guides you to the correct notes by color-coding them and showing a visual keyboard at the bottom of the screen. It's like having a supportive virtual music teacher right at your fingertips!

So, what do the colors mean?

  • Blue - means you played the note correctly with no hint given 🎉

  • Yellow - means you played the note correctly after the app gave you a hint on the visual keyboard at the bottom of the screen

  • Red (in moving stages only) - means you played the wrong note

Tip: If you're struggling with the notes, sometimes a visual keyboard will appear at the bottom of the screen. Use the hints on that keyboard!

The grey keys show the notes that the app is hearing, but if you've played a note incorrectly, the correct key will be highlighted in yellow.

What else do I need to know?

While you're learning with our Courses (some learners may see this labeled Learn) or in Songs (some learners may see this labeled Play), pressing pause (top left) will display two different menus:

1. Left-hand menu navigation tools

  • The Play button unpauses the app, so you can return to where you left off

  • The Restart button starts the stage over again if you'd like to try something over

  • The Listen button plays whichever notes you can currently see on the screen (this feature is available on iOS only)

  • The Exit button will take you back to the mini-journey

2. Extra options lower menu (iOS only)

  • Speed controls: Slow down or speed up the tempo of the song

  • Hands: Choose to practice with your left hand only, right hand only, or both hands

  • Practice mode: This will enable hints if you play a note incorrectly, and the song will wait for you to play the note correctly before moving on

  • Metronome: Enables the in-app metronome to help with your timing (instead of the background music and vocals)

  • Finger numbers: Toggle finger numbers on/off to help you play the notes without relying on the finger numbers
