Some singers feel stuck because they can’t access their head voice (sometimes called falsetto). If that sounds familiar, don’t worry - this is very common, and it’s a great sign that you’re curious about how your voice works.
Before trying to control your head voice, the first step is simply finding it.
What is head voice? 🤍
Head voice is the lighter, higher part of your vocal range. It usually feels:
Softer and more airy
Less powerful than your speaking voice
Easier when you’re relaxed and playful
There’s no need to force it - in fact, forcing usually makes it harder to find.
Easy ways to discover your head voice 🎯
Try these playful sounds and notice which ones feel lighter and higher than your normal speaking voice:
Do a big yawn and let out a gentle yawn sound 😮
Pretend you’re talking to a SUPER cute baby and use that high, sweet voice 👶
Imagine you’re at a big concert and go “woohoooo!” with the crowd 🎉
Mimic a train and go “choo choo” 🚆
Most people naturally land in head voice with at least one of these - no technique required!
What to focus on (and what not to) 🧠
Focus on how it feels, not how it sounds
Keep it light, relaxed, and playful
Don’t worry about singing notes or songs yet
Finding your head voice is already a win ✨
⚠️ When to take a break
If your throat feels tight, dry, or strained while trying these sounds, pause and rest. Head voice should feel easy and gentle, never forced.
What comes next?
Once you can recognize your head voice, you’ll start noticing it more often - especially in warmups and higher notes. With time and practice, it becomes easier to move between chest voice and head voice smoothly.
