How to Sing with Support (not just from your throat)

We often get asked how to sing “from the stomach” instead of just the throat - especially when you want your voice to sound stronger, fuller, or more confident.

Singing can feel very different depending on how you use your body.

What “singing from the stomach” really means 🤍

Technically, all sound is created by your vocal folds, which are in your throat. So you’re never actually singing from your stomach.

When people talk about singing “from the stomach,” they’re usually describing supported singing - using your breath, posture, and whole body to help your voice instead of forcing sound out of your throat.

Strong, healthy singing comes from:

  • Deep breathing (not shallow chest breaths)

  • Good posture - tall, relaxed, and open

  • An open mouth and natural resonance

When these work together, your voice sounds stronger and feels easier.

How to feel more support when you sing 🌬️

  • Take a slow, deep breath and let your belly expand gently

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed (no lifting!)

  • Stand or sit tall, with your chest open

  • Let the sound flow out - don’t push or squeeze it

If your throat feels tight or tired, that’s a sign to pause and reset. Supported singing should feel stable and comfortable, not strained.

Why this matters

Using your whole body helps you:

  • Sing louder without yelling

  • Hold notes more steadily

  • Reduce vocal strain

  • Build strength over time

Support isn’t about effort - it’s about balance. You've got this! 💪
